You might have already seen J.M. Hackman’s epic book cover reveal post of Burn a few weeks ago. Today, we have the author herself sharing her thoughts on wrapping up her third and final book Burn in The Firebrand Chronicles series, releasing May 26th. Let’s welcome Jill!

Finishing Well…

Writing Burn was a surreal experience—the third and final book in The Firebrand Chronicles! If someone had pulled me aside five years ago to tell me I’d have a series out, as well as stories in several anthologies, I never would’ve believed them. My previous years (and years) of writing with what seemed like no forward progress had left its mark.

After exploring “what-if” possibilities in Spark and struggling with pantsing in Flare, Burn offered something new—a boat load of expectations. As the third and last book, it had to offer new sights, adventures, and characters all within an epic framework. The cliffhanger ending in Flare also left a lot of unanswered questions. (Yes, I know I did it to myself!) The fun was answering those questions for my readers and tying everything up for this cast of characters I’d grown to love like best friends.

With the fun came a bittersweet feeling. I had to say goodbye to these characters, trusting I’d given them the best possible ending I could. I remember typing “The End” and then just feeling so incredibly sad because that was it. The Firebrand Chronicles was finished. I’d poured so much of myself and my family into the project.

After grieving a bit, I took a break to breathe and recover (and then plunged into a creating a story world for a new project. I can’t shut off the ideas!) J

I hope you enjoy Burn, this last installment to the Firebrand Chronicles—it’s been such a blessing to share it with you.

About Burn

Life: 1. Brenna James: 0.

An AWOL talent, an enemy-occupied hometown, and a Life Shade boyfriend—Brenna James just wants something to go right. Although her family has been given sanctuary in Syeira, Brenna will never be safe as long as Rune is hunting down and killing Firebrands.

Can someone please wake her up already?

When a prophecy sends Brenna and Baldwin on a confusing quest, they aren’t sure where to begin. They must find the Caelestis Staff, a powerful object that both cuts and mends space itself. Rune wants it too, and he’ll use any lethal tactics necessary to obtain it.

Yeah, nightmare material right there.

A traveling oasis, plenty of man-eating mermaids, and one Skeleton King later, Brenna seriously doubts she has the edge she needs to confront Rune. When Brenna’s faced with the biggest test of her life, will she burn like the Firebrand she is? Or will she burn out?

  1. Reading Spark, I was so excited and wanted to rush to find out what happened next. But knowing this is the last and final book in the Firebrand Chronicles series, it’ll be a struggle between wanting to know what happens and making Brenna’s story last longer. Thanks for sharing your story, Jill. ❤ Congratulations!

  2. Missing my favorite characters (whether they’re mine or someone else’s) is the reason I re-read books and re-watch movies. It’s like spending time with old friends! So I totally understand the grief, Jill. I’ll feel the same way when I finally finish the prequel and sequel to mine! 😉
